Anxiety & Depression

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress and can actually be beneficial in some situations. For some people, however, anxiety can become excessive, and while the person suffering may realize it is excessive they may also have difficulty controlling it and it may negatively affect their day-to-day living.  There are a wide variety of anxiety disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and specific phobias to name a few. Collectively they are among the most common mental disorders experienced by Americans.
Major depression is one of the more common mental disorders in the United States. In 2015, an estimated 16.1 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States had at least one major depressive episode in the past year. This number represented 6.7% of all U.S. adults.  Research on mental health epidemiology shows that mental disorders are common throughout the United States, affecting tens of millions of people each year, and that, overall, only about half of those affected receive treatment – National Institute of Mental Health.
You are a unique individual, and because of that, there is not one type of therapy that will work for every person. At Hope4Family you will receive individualized care. I will work closely with you to help you understand the underlying causes of anxiety and depression. We will look at the ways you have tried to deal with these issues in the past, and we’ll uncover the useful tools you have already learned, while helping you to build new and more effective strategies.
Research has shown that anxiety and depression are decreased when people act in ways that are congruent with their values. By getting to know you, and better understanding the world from your point of view, I will work with you to explore what is most important to you and ways in which you can take action to live your life in balance with your values.
Christian cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to be effective in treatment of depression by effecting the whole person and addressing the spirituality.   See this article.
Grief Recovery

If you are suffering from the loss of someone special in your life, you have experienced the loss of  a loved one, you may choose to go through a program like GriefShare in order to work your way through the process.  Griefshare is a 13-week program which helps to get through the grieving process by surrounding yourself with others who have lost someone and sharing the feelings you have with others and getting information about grief.  I host a GriefShare program at Fellowship Community Church at 130 Hydraulic St in Lemmon Valley and you can sign up at the GriefShare website or by calling the church or sending an email to tony@hope4family.com.  The cost is just 20.00 for the workbook and you can continue to go as long as you desire.

Forgiveness Therapy
Forgiveness is the process of accepting, understanding, and empathizing with someone who has hurt you, which may seem unlikely at this point in your life. Uncovering the depth of the pain and anger is key to working together to forgive.
Processes to reach forgiveness are sometimes as complicated as many other human processes and may take several sessions to accomplish. Mr. Wildey uses steps developed by Everett Worthington, Professor of Psychology Virginia Commonwealth University to uncover and address those things that keep you from achieving the freedom which comes from forgiving someone.A systematic process of understanding the elements of forgiveness is practiced in getting to the heart of the pain and anger or resentment so that clients can realize freedom from resentment and go on to lead comfortable lives.

Relationship Counseling

Couples therapy and relationship counseling can be quite complicated. Those in therapy may expect to gain understanding of communication issues, map out roles in their relationships, and begin to understand the dynamics between individuals in marriage.

Clients come for an initial hour and a half to establish the counseling process and begin. The SYMBIS assessment should be done prior to the first session and it will be evaluated and discussed in session.  Most couples are delighted with the in-depth findings of the process and find many things they never knew about their spouse. This information is then used to help couples understand one another.

Integration of Christian Philosophy and Theology Into Counseling

Christian counseling is a process of integrating current theories in counseling with the existing truths of the Bible. Secular psychologists operate on a biopsychosocial model of human development and behavior. This model proposes humans develop and operate according to biological, psychological, and social influences. Accordingly, we are products of our biology and environment, both bearing equal importance. In more recent years, psychologists have begun recognizing that our spirituality impacts our lives, but have yet to say it is imperative for life. While the traditional psychological theories and models that are based upon naturalism are insufficient from a Christian worldview, not all of secular psychology is wrong. All truth is God’s truth and indeed, there are many helpful and positive aspects of psychology to consider, which is why there is a need for integration. As a Christian counselor, I incorporate spirituality to get a biopsychosocialspiritual model of the human experience and treat all of the person.
